The Pretenders — 2000 Miles

This is an edited repost from 2019

Per wikipedia:
2000 Miles” is a song by The Pretenders that was released in 1983 as the preceding single to their 1984 album Learning to Crawl. It was most popular in the UK, where it peaked at No. 15 on the UK Singles Chart in December 1983. In the US, it was released as the B-side of both the 7-inch single and 12-inch single remix of the band’s hit “Middle of the Road.”

Considered a Christmas song, it has been released on various Christmas compilation albums. While many people believe the song’s title and lyrics refer to two long-distance lovers who miss each other over the holidays, it was actually written for James Honeyman-Scott, the group’s original guitar player, who died the year before the song was released.

Robbie McIntosh plays beautifully on ‘2000 Miles‘,” singer Chrissie Hynde recalled. “Anything to avoid listening to my voice and my stupid words.

The song frequently reappears in the UK Charts around Christmas time staying in the charts for a few weeks over the Christmas period.

He’s gone two thousand miles
It’s very far
The snow is falling down
Gets colder day by day
I miss you

The children will sing
He’ll be back at Christmas time

In these frozen and silent nights
Sometimes in a dream you appear
Outside under the purple sky
Diamonds in the snow sparkle
Our hearts were singing
It felt like Christmas time

Two thousand miles
Is very far through the snow
I’ll think of you
Wherever you go

He’s gone two thousand miles
It’s very far
The snow is falling down
Gets colder day by day
I miss you

I can hear people singing
It must be Christmas time
I hear people singing
It must be Christmas time

It’s commemorating a loved one’s death, so maybe not? It is a beautiful song with deep poetry to it.

Now that’s more like it. You can have Santana as a guest guitar player 🙂

Haven’t heard this one in a while…always liked this song. They were one of my bright spots in the 80s.

Glad you like that song. The 80s was not my favorite decade for music, that’s for sure. There was no snow on the ground when I went to sleep last night. When I woke up this morning it looked like the photo on the youtube.

ME EITHER!!! I thought some of the music was not real sounding. Fake drums and monotone voices…Not everything was bad of course…but I didn’t like a lot of the popular music of the day.

I never unpacked everything from my move 18 months ago because I knew I would have to move again. I’m working on making it only one more move, not two, but still in limbo. Not sure exactly when I’ll have to leave where I am now. In the meantime, I keep getting rid of things, which I guess is good.

  6. Gorgeous tune, Lisa – totally love Chrissie Hynde’s vocals and that jangly guitar sound! Frankly, I never paid much attention to the lyrics and, as such, it completely escaped me that it’s a Christmas song.
