Doodads — gardening inside and out

indoor houseplant blossoms are in full bloom now. so pretty!

It’s been a busy weekend for doing plant things.  Yesterday older son came over and put together 2 corrugated metal planters with 3ftx4ft (approx) dimensions.  Thank you for making it easy for me, son!  Pictures later of those once I decide where they are going to go, get them situated and full of dirt, and planted with plants.  (Will try to remember to take pics along the way.)

I also decided to transplant the many “Mortgage Lifter” variety of tomatoes from their seedling packs into bigger pots.  Where in the world I will put these approximately 40 seedlings I do not know.

here are some of the tomato seedlings before transplant. bottom left are pepper seedlings from seeds I got from the seed bank at the library. Every one of the seeds sprouted but why only 5 seeds!? In the upper right almost out of the pic are herb seeds (forgot what kind) that sprouted like mad. Those came from a sweet kit younger son and his wife got me for Christmas that came with their own tiny burlap planter bags.

10 of the 40 or so tomato seedlings I have. You’ll notice some have multiple plants in each pot. I don’t have the heart to pinch them down to one just yet. The wild looking thing in the burlap bag on the right are … Arnica seedlings! I skipped the lemon balm seeds and planted just a couple of the seeds I gathered up north last fall as an experiment. These are vigorous seeds and the rest will be directly sown outside after danger of frost is over. Recommendation for anyone planting these: soak the seeds overnight to soften them. The seedcase is tough and I had to give them a little help getting out of them. Also note I had some trouble in the soil with fungus gnats, but between the sticky butterflies and mosquito bits it cleared them right out.

  1. Wow, looks like you were really busy, Lisa. And you’re going to have many tomatoes! 🙂

Here in central NJ, we’ve pretty much had rain all weekend. As such, you really didn’t want to be outdoors. At least it looks like the rain is going to stop after midnight. Tomorrow morning, we should see some sun, so I’m hoping for a walk prior to work!

I was and it felt good to dig in the dirt. Thankfully if too many tomatoes I will can them. I’ve also dehydrated them and turned them into tomato powder for home-made veggie pasta.

It’s supposed to rain heavy for the next 2 days. We need it but it’s still discouraging with the grey skies.

Hoping your rain wraps up and you get your morning walk in 🙂

  5. When I started growing tomatoes in my balcony (just two seedlings every year), the first year I had none, the second year two and this year I had seven tomatoes. Good luck with a good crop. 🙂

I love the pink tinge those blossoms got on them. It’s been raining for days now. Once it stops and warms up there will be paradise.
