The Weekly Smile 072423

I would have to say my biggest weekly smile in the last 7 days was to finish sending out poetry postcards for POPO2023 (Poetry Postcard Festival 2023.)  How it works is you register and pay your registration fee ($15) and in return you are sent a list with your name and the names of 31 other poets across the world with our addresses; starting on July 1 and going to August 31 the expectation is that a postcard with a poem you’ve written will be sent to each person on your list.

This is my third year doing it, after learning about it from Kerfe.  The first year, I made all of my own postcards with slimverse form poems.  The second year, I bought already “arted” postcards and did troiku form poems.  This year again the already arted cards and freeform poems.

What’s also different this year, besides freeform poems, is that the poems were written first and then I tried to find a best match in the postcard.  Most of the poems were written after opening up the house, while drinking first cuppajoe.  All poems involved assistance from my two supervisors, Mlady and Dotty.  I did run out of steam on the stream-of-consciousness towards the end, so there are a few ekphrastic poems at the end.

Besides the people on my official list to send to, I did create two collage postcards for two of my favorite poets and blogmates, Kerfe and Alexandra.  (I hope you two enjoy the collages and the poems.)

POPO’s founding organizer asks that we wait a month after the end of the festival to post our poems.  A month from the end of August puts it at October 1st.  As I have for other years, they will start posting then.

Yes, I’m smiling about getting them all sent out.  Thanks for the invitation to share, Trent.

There are about 500 participating this year. That’s 500 x 31 poetry postcards whizzing over the globe in 60 days. It’s a lot of fun to do.

Most likely not. Even if it turns out easy, it is still something I would stress over.

You have a lot going on already I know. It’s intended to do the opposite, so probably not for you. Paul just posted an article about the benefits of doing it. If I get a chance will post it.

That makes it special. My mom would always ask if I would make a card myself…birthday…Christmas…etc…I never understood why…now I do.

<3 Awwwww that is so sweet, Max. I would have liked to meet your mom. I still have all of the cards my kids made for me and anything they have made are my most treasured possessions.

She was a good one…single mom in the 70s and worked 3 jobs…but always had time for me.
That is great that you still have everything…Jennifer keeps Bailey’s things also…and so do I.
